The “BIRDS OF PREY PROTECTION FOUNDATION” is a non-governmental and non-profit organization. Numerous activities of the Foundation are taking place in the field of protection and conservation of endangered species and their natural habitats, as well as on the return of extinct species.

Our mission is to protect and preserve the most endangered group of birds of prey, as an essential part of Serbia’s biological diversity.

Our goal is to increase the chances of survival of endangered species, the return of Griffon Vulture to the areas of eastern Serbia where it once lived, the reintroduction of extinct species of vultures who were once part of Serbia’s fauna: the Bearded Vulture, Black Vulture and Egyptian Vulture.

The Birds of Prey Protection Foundation will celebrate the “International Vulture Awareness Day” on September 5, 2020, in the Uvac Reserve. Unfortunately, this year, due to the coronavirus, we are not able to organize a trip with our dear members and friends to Uvac, but whoever is able to come, is certainly welcome!

For a decade now, the Foundation, together with many organizations in our country, but also in the world, has been drawing the public’s attention to the need to protect the most endangered group of birds of prey, especially vultures, at the beginning of September. We will organize the celebration of the International Vulture Day in cooperation with the Institute for Biological Research “Sinisa Stankovic”, the University of Belgrade, “Reserve Uvac”, and the Institute for Nature Protection of Serbia has been invited to join us. The main event will be the release of three Griffon Vultures, which were “victims” of helicopter flights in the Reserve during July and August this year, and which are currently in the aviary of the Shelter for Soups on Uvac.

Apart from Serbia, this year the Foundation is marking the International Day for the Protection of Vultures in Bosnia and Herzegovina in cooperation with “Novi Val” from Blagaj and the Ornithological Society “Naše ptice” from Sarajevo by releasing our Griffon Vulture Luka, which is currently in the aviary in Blagaju, and he is from Trešnjica.

“DOBRILA CAME BACK HOME”
14.04.2019. – Our Griffon Vulture Dobrila happily arrived to Serbia! The “Turkish Airlines” transported Dobrila to the airport “Nikola Tesla” in Belgrade, and from there, the Rangers of the Uvac Reserve transferred her to the Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”, where she will stay until the decision to be released. This is the result of a successful campaign launched by the Birds od Prey Protection Foundation from the beginning of the year, when became clear that Dobrila was unable to return to Serbia alone. The response of citizens, as well as state institutions to our call, was a great example of good practice in a joint effort to preserve a Griffon Vulture as part of our natural heritage.

Please take a look at our Gallery about the Dobrila’s trip

We would like thank everyone who helped this action. The “Turkish Airlines” and ambassador Mr. Tanju Bilgic, then the Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkey, who took care about Dobrila while she was with them. Also to the Minister, Mr. Goran Trivan, and our institutions to the Ministry of Environmental Protection, the Institute for Nature Protection, the CITES office, the Uvac Reserve, the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stankovic”, all of which helped to finish this campaign happily and Dobrila came back to her home country.

We owe special gratitude to donors who responded to our call and paid the money for Dobrila. We had 47 payments and collected exactly 140.950 RSD! From these funds we will buy a satellite transmitter that we intend to put on Dobrila in order to follow her when she is released.

25.03.2019. – Dear friends, the fundraising campaign for the return of our Dobrila to Serbia and to Uvac has been completed. We had 47 donors and collected 140.950,00 dinars (RSD), which is enough to return to Dobrila. Thank you all for your support.
The documentation is still in progress and the practical aspects of transferring Dobrila are still being processed. We are informed that this is at the end, and on this occasion we would like to thank the Turkish authorities. We intend to transfer Dobrila to Uvac and leave her on the ceremony of the Foundation, which we will announce on time.

22.02.2019.
The Griffon Vulture named “Dobrila” has been caught in Turkey, again! (More about the whole story you can find out here … »). After this young female was captured and released on several times it turned out that she is not able to return to her homeland on Uvac alone, where she hatched last year. She needs our help! If we can collect sufficient funds and complete the necessary documentation, we will return the bird to Uvac. Dobrila is currently located at the Turkish Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection, and Mr. Burak from the Ministry has informed us that she is in a good condition and that they will keep her until the transport to Serbia.

We would like to invite you to support this action, so we can collect together enough money for the Dobrila’s transport back to Uvac. Here are the Payment Instructions in… EUR» Every donation means a lot to the final goal – a safe Dobrila’s trip home. Thank you!
