The Birds of Prey Protection Foundation is a non-governmental and non-profit organization that works on controlling endangered species of birds of prey and reintroducing the extinct ones. The process of habitat destruction habitats and the extinction of species is becoming more intense. Together, we can slow down or even stop that process. We can bring back some of the species that we used to share our living space with.
The Foundation takes part in scientific researches and it works on making science popular through education. It organizes a network of associates and ornithologists for the monitoring of endangered species and their habitats. The Bird of Prey Protection Foundation organizes lectures, schools in nature, publishes books, brochures and posters, all with the aim to raise our awareness about the preserve biological diversity. The Foundation organizes its programs in cooperation with the University of Belgrade, the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” and the Serbian Biological Society.
The Griffon Vultures are an endangered species in the Balkans and its numbers are deteriorating. The general support to the Foundation and the idea of protecting this endangered species has enabled us to preserve and multiply the ancient population of the Griffon Vultures in Serbia. The Griffon Vulture is a species dependent on protection measures. Since 1985, the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” has been monitoring the Griffon Vulture’s population in Serbia and Hercegovina. The Griffon Vulture left Hercegovina at the beginning of the war, in 1992. and a number of them moved to Serbia.
The program measures for active protection of the last flock of Griffon Vultures in Serbia, proposed by the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stanković” could not be introduced by the state and the number of Griffon Vultures came down to the last 10 couples in 1992! In order to save this species from extinction, we were organized and founded “The Birds of Prey Protection Fund” in 1994. The Fund managed the “Klisura reke Uvac” Reserve and implemented active protection measures at the Special Nature Reserve, which increased the population of this endangered species around 12 times!
THIS IS US, join us… » in the work on protecting birds of prey and preserving the biodiversity of Serbia:
The success in the protection of the Griffon Vultures enabled the Birds of Prey Protection Fund to be registered in 2002. as a legate – “The Birds of Prey Protection Foundation, Belgrade”. The proclaimed goals of the founders of the Foundation are: to bring back the Griffon Vultures to the places from where he has withdrawn, as well as to return three extinct species of vultures back to Serbia: the Bearded Vulture, Black Vulture and Egyptian Vulture. The Foundation has been introducing contemporary methods of conservation biology, such as reproduction “ex situ”, video-control of the feeding place (“restaurant” for Vultures), census, marking, satellite monitoring and regular monitoring. The Foundation program also include monitoring of Belgrade’s urban predators and visits to the protected habitats of endangered species in Serbia.
