On the 1.9.2018. years the three Griffon Vultures were released with satellite transmitters into SRP “Uvac”. We thank all who helped the action, as well as those who were with us.
Here are the first results:
Successfully released griffon vultures with satellite transmitters
Today, we have successfully released three Griffon vultures with satellite transmitters in SRP “Uvac”. In the photo you can see where they spent first night.
First satellite transmitters installed
The first Team of the Foundation is in the field. We’ve set up three satellite transmitters on the Vulutres. We are waiting for results soon.
Successfully tested three satellite transmitters “OrniTrack-50-GPS / GSM”
Today, all three satellite transmitters “OrniTrack-50 – GPS-GSM tracker” have been tested. We are planning to place them on our three Griffon Vultures, in order to keep track of their movement in the following period.
Transmitters work great!
Testing was done on the roof of the Institute for Biological Research “Siniša Stankovic”.
Even a minimal movement on the roof of the Institute are recorded well!
The Bearded Vulture and Egyptian Vulture, species that no longer exist in Serbia…
The Bearded Vulture (Gypaetus barbatus) and Egyptian Vulture, (Neophron percnopterus), species that were once part of Serbia’s fauna. It has been several decades since we lost them. One of the goals of the Foundation is the return of these species to Serbia.
Photos are from the BeoZoo garden. We hope that the Belgrade ZOO garden will soon become the center for the reproduction of endangered species and will be included in the reintroduction.

“Piroćanac”, Welcome to Uvac…
08/11/2018. The Rangers of the Special Nature Reserve “Uvac” transported Griffon Vulture called “Piroćanac” at Uvac!
Everything went according to plan, and Piroćanac is located in the Center of the Reserve, with three others Griffon Vultures. It will take some time to adapt to a new environment, as well as to install a satellite transmitter, donated by the BeoZoo garden. 09/01/2018. Piroćanac will be released into his natural environment.
SEE how it looked in the photo gallery:
Piroćanac was born at the ZOO in 2016. and it was planned to be among the first birds released on the mountain Stara Planina in the settlement program. Unfortunately, we could no longer wait for the continuation of this program on the Stara planina, so we decided to leave himat Uvac, where it is most appropriate for him.
We present you a new poster…
On the occasion of the “The Vultures Awareness Day of the Balkan”, on the 1st September, 2018. this year, the Foundation for the Protection of Birds of Prey presents you a NEW POSTER!
We thank everyone who helped the satellite monitoring program for Griffon Vultures and celebrating “The Vultures Awareness Day of the Balkan”!
Join us on the 1st of September on Uvac.
Griffon vulture Piroćanac travels from BeoZoo garden to Uvac …
On Saturday, August 11, 2018. , at 11am, Griffon Vulture, named “Piroćanac” will be transffered to Special Nature Reserve “Uvac”. He will be placed in a cage, at the “Bird Center”, until he accustomed to the environment and then released.
Piroćanac will take one of the satellite transmitters, donated by the BeoZoo garden. Soon, we will be able to monitor live on our website, where he is moving.
Piroćanac was hatched at the ZOO in 2016 and it was planned to be among the first birds released in the Stara Planina mountain in the settlement program. Unfortunately, we could not wait longer for the continuation of that program, so we decided to leave him at Uvac, where it is most appropriate for him.
It is the first strictly protected species that were born in the ZOO and which is released in nature in Serbia. Programs for the reproduction of endangered species in captivity and their release into nature are becoming more and more important for endangered species, whose numbers are small or even disappeared in nature.
With this gift and donation, the Belgrade ZOO garden is involved in the process of reintroduction of endangered species and becomes the Centre for reproduction. We hope that there will be more news like this in the future, not just about Griffon Vultures.
Piroćanac, hace a nice trip!
