About the Griffon Vulture named “Dobrila”…
In the middle of December last year, we received information about our Griffon Vulture with the winged mark “18”, which was found in Turkey near the Syrian border (about which we wrote here …”).
This young female hatched at Uvac and marked on the nest in 2018 by Marking Team of the Birds of Prey Protection Foundation.
LOCALITY WHERE IS THE NEST:
MAGNIFICENT VIEW OVER THE NEST WHERE THE BIRD WAS MARKED ON THE 1.6.2018. YEARS:
During the marking she was the calmest Vulture and she was known about her “selfy” photographs together with members of the Marking Team. That is why she was named “DOBRILA”.
Dobrila successfully left the nest and her first report was near the city of Diyarbakir in southeastern Turkey, 12.12.2018. years.
According to our data, which we have because of the long-term regular implementation of the program of marking and monitoring of vultures, about 92% of young birds wander. Most migrate to the southeastern Mediterranean. On that occasion, a large number of them suffer in various ways, from poisoning, electrocution, poaching, exhaustion, etc. About 62% manage to return to homeland
Thus, Dobrila was found in Turkey, and the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry of that country informed us, in accordance with good international practice of protection of endangered species.
After the inspection and several days of supervision by an authorized veterinarian she recovered and was released.
Unfortunately, by the end of December, she was found by the border patrol of the Turkish army. The soldiers caught the bird, placed her in warm place, fed her, and then handed over to the National Parks Directorate. In the first moment it was thought that she has broken the wing, but the examination found only a minor injuries.
She is now safe under expert supervision. According to the veterinarian, she recovered, she is ready to fly, but she will still be waiting for the weather to improve and strengthen.
We hope Dobrila will be lucky and find her way back to Uvac. We are going to continue our work on creating more favorable conditions in Serbia in order to keep these birds in greater numbers in our country, less wandering and risking. Here we primarily refer to the opening of new feeding places.
It is extreme important to continue of marking and monitoring of the vultures so we can know where our birds are moving and how we can help them. About marking and how you can support this activity, read here … » strong>

Workshop for the future of Vulture in Balkans. Tackling Threats and Building Network opportunities, Messolonghi, Greece, Dec. 2018.
The Birds of Prey Protection Foundation took a part in “Workshop for the future of Vulture in Balkans. Tackling Threats and Building Network opportunities, Messolonghi, Greece” from 7th to 9th of December 2018. We thank our hosts for the hospitality and extraordinary organization of the workshop.
At the same time as we stayed in Greece, we received information from Maria Ganoti and a photo of our Griffon Vulture with wing label “33” located at Athens on Mount Parnitha.
We marked him in May this year on Uvac, and the last time he was recorded with video surveillance on September 30, 2018. at the Rastoke feeding station on Uvac:
Griffon vulture “18” was found near Syrian border
In Turkey, near the Syrian border was found in our griffon vulture with a wing with “18”. He was the gentlest sup at this year marking the Uvac and is known for its “self” photographs with team members marking the Foundation for the Protection of Birds of Prey.
The bird is found starved, but healthy and after recovery he will be released. The Vulture was taken over by the Burak Tatar Wildlife Biologist Department” of the Wildlife Management Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry. In addition to the Vulture named “Kerem”, which was also saved in Turkey (more about that… » a>) this is another example of good practice that shows how Turkey has made progress in protecting endangered species in recent years.
Unfortunately, because of the small number of feeding stations in Serbia, there is a sharp competition in the winter period, and young birds are forced to leave Serbia. We estimate that about 50 young birds from Serbia died from such wanderings annually.
A photo of “Marija mts” from 27.10.2018.
The photo of “Marija mts” we have got from Brano Rudić. He made it on the “Vape River” near the Uvac. Satellite tracking shows her movement during that period on the same place.
